The series chronicles the behind-the-scenes events at the fictional Atlantis Cable News (ACN) channel. It features an ensemble cast including Jeff Daniels as anchor Will McAvoy, who, together with his staff set out to put on a news show “in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements.”

It’s been lacking in most, but now this is good television.

Download Podcast | Floating Downstream’s New Music 08/05/2012

[UPDATE: I did do this quite along time ago but due to technical difficulties I have only now been able to get it up]

Instead of keeping this up to date with music news and posting one by one what I believe to be the great new music. I am going to simply put it into a podcast with the songs one after the hour. The first one is just over 1 hour long and includes new music from the end of April to the start of May. I’m going to try and do a podcast every week, of what new music is coming up.

To begin with I’m going to briefly talk about them below. This might end up being a radio style podcast, but right now I’m not sure. So here we go.

S. Carey - Marfa

Sean Carey, a.k.a S. Carey is probably best known for being the drummer/supporting vocals for Justine Vernon’s Bon Iver, but what you probably don’t realise is that in his own right he has been recording solo stuff for the last couple of years in the same style as indie folk. Saying that it happened by accident.

I didn’t start out thinking I was going to write an album. I had a couple song ideas, and it just went from there. I recorded a few songs, and as time went on I got further into those songs and recorded more layers, then I had friends come over and record stuff I couldn’t play, and by that time I had come up with more songs until finally I just had this full length thing

He released his first album ‘All We Grow’ in 2010 and is now just released his follow up EP ‘Hoyas’. This is the last song on the EP, called ‘Marfa’

Vance Joy - Riptide

A fellow friend of mine has being playing around Melbourne town lately in smallish one-off gigs playing his folkie/pop music to his friends and family. He recently went into the studio and recorded this little song that he calls at his shows his ‘smash hit’. It’s reminiscent of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, with it’s folk ukulele bending the lyrics to the heart strings of the listener, but creating a more pop atmosphere with the pounding of the drums. Even though he’s a mate, keep an eye on the one.

Angus Stone - Bird on the Buffalo

Long awaited solo debut album from one half of Angus and Julia Stone, brings us Angus Stone’s second single from his album which is set to be released in July. Here he is sounding very much like Dylan. Also released is a video to go along with this check that out here.

Melodie Nelson - Six Six Six (Feat Geoffrey O’Connor)

First new music since last years ‘Meditations on The Sun’, Melodie has teamed up with Geoffrey O’Connor to duet on new track called ‘Six Six Six’, bringing together a bluesy string drenched, piano infused ballad with allusions to Lucifer himself. Along with this is a spooky eerie film clip filmed in the NSW Hunter Valley region. Check that out here.
This will be released as a 7inch mid this year, with Geoffrey’s duet on one side and another duet on the other side (rumours are pointing towards Gotye - TBC).

Beach House - Myth (Bloom)

Fourth album for this Baltimore band ‘Bloom’, a follow up to 2010’s ‘Teen Dream’ brings these guys back for another dream pop album full of fantasy head trippie synths surrounding the sweeping guitar styles of Alex Scally. I found this album very similar to 2010’s ‘Teen Dream’ but that doesn’t make it a bad thing, not at all, it makes it a great thing. ‘Bloom’ will be released May 15th.

Animal Collective - Honeycomb

The first single to be released by these guys in preparation for the next LP that is sure to be dropped sometime this year. Again these guys are back for the psychedelic sound of chaos, infusing vocals quickly into drips and draps of sounds mashed together to bring about another bunch of songs similar to 2009’s ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’. This was released on their website recently with another song ‘Gotham’, stay tuned for more info on AnCo’s album details.

Jack White - I’m Shakin’ (Blunderbuss)

Finally Jack’s back but this time ditching the band (in a way), for a more polished debut solo album. I imagine its been a long time coming. ‘Blunderbuss’, released April 24th is a well thought out bluesy guitar album full of what Jack White is great at doing, blues rock at it’s finest.

Alabama Shakes - Hold On (Boys & Girls)

“Bless my heart, Bless my soul, didn’t think I would make it to 22 years old, someone up above saying come on Brittney, you got to come on up. You got to Hold on…”

This song and this band came out of left field for me, I didn’t see these guys coming until it was too late. They blew me away. Their blues rock sank to my soul and churned it into a brighter mirror of its self. And the simplicity of those lyrics are just divine, and work. And the rest of the album is just remarkable. ‘Boys & Girls’ was released on April 9th (almost a month ago now), and not bad for a debut album from these guys.

The Temper Trap - Need Your Love

Riding on their success from their first album 2009’s ‘Conditions’ brings these guys around for another dosage. This single firstly released almost two months ago now on 21st of March has just exploded everywhere, getting regular rotation on all stations commercial and others. Their album entitled ‘The Temper Trap’ is set to be released on May 18th. This is the first single from the album.

Teen Spirit - Fuck The Beach

TEAM SPIRIT began when Passion Pit synth player Ayad Al Adhamy started writing songs on the guitar. Wanting more and needing to rock live, he combined with long time friends Roman Tobias Pettigrew & Dave Weingarten & together recorded the TEAM SPIRIT EP. A blend inspired by motown Bass, roaring drums, ripping guitars and glam rock vocals; here is TEAM SPIRIT.

Passion Pit - Take A Walk (Gossamer)

Did someone say Passion Pit, here comes the much awaited follow up to 2009’s ‘Manners’. First single and first heard song from the upcoming album ‘Gossamer’ out July 23rd. The electropop band are about to head out on a European and North American tour, and to get people in the mood for it here is ‘Take A Walk’

Tribute to MCA, Adam Yauch - Beastie Boys - Super Disco Breakin’ (Hello Nasty)

When I was young, I saw an ad come up on TV it was advertising The Beastie Boys current album Hello Nasty with the song Intergalactic. From then on i’ve been hooked. So much so that even in high school, along with two friends, we performed at a lunch time concert reenacting ‘Fight For Your Right’. I saw them front row at the Big Day Out in 2005, which just blew me completely away. Word cannot describe.

On May 4th, we lost one third of The Beastie Boys. Adam Yauch a.k.a MCA lost his battle with cancer. Here I play tribute to him by playing the song that I first properly heard from the first album that I bought of theres. Super Disco Breakin’.

Major Lazer - For Free (Feat Amber From The Dirty Projectors)

Last month Major Lazer previewed “Get Free,” a track for which Diplo recruited Dirty Projectors siren Amber Coffman. Well now, it’s out today, and downloadable at majorlazergetfree.com for the price of an email. It’s good! There’s a video, too, featuring Major Lazer’s cartoon dancehall commando sitting on a pile of dinosaur bones and staring off meaningfully into the sunrise, thinking about Amber’s inspirational lyrics and swept up in the track’s wistful melancholy. Coffman’s part is transcribed, so you too can feel Major Lazer’s anti-government yearning for liberation. Use caution when singing along at home, though; in typical fashion, some of these Coffman melodies dip and dive hard enough to break an amateur voicebox.

Santigold - Desperate Youth (Masters of My Make-Believe)

Second album from Santigold released April 24th, brings back the foot tapping, tables jumping, ruckus building electro that was very familiar of her first album. Here I’ve provided you all with the third single from the album, proceeded by ‘Go! (Feat Karen O)’, ‘Big Mouth’.

THEESatisfaction - QueenS (awE naturalE)

Debut album from Seattle based hip hop outfit, combining those electro aspects with heavy addictive beats and 80’s style disco themes spliced between the sheets. If this is just their debut i’m interested to see what they do next. Their album awE naturalE was released March 27th. Worth a listen.

Grimes - Oblivion (Visions)

Third album from electro pop princess Claire Boucher a.k.a Grimes. Greatly affections album that just gets under your skin and buries deep. This album came out at the start of the year but it still a favourite of mine and I couldn’t resist putting it up.

Andras Fox - That’s All (Daydreaming Split 12inch)

Melbourne’s own Andras Fox has just released his own mini LP ‘Daydreaming’. The dance triggers of the opener ‘That’s All’ brings back the 1970’s vibe with a sharp funkadelic feel good vibe that resonates in the feet and makes it’s way to your hands above your head. Check it out at his bandcamp for more details.

Sigur Ros - Ekki múkk (Valtari)

A return to all that is pure and right just in the world, and that can only mean one band Icelandic’s Sigur Ros. After delving in songs for film and their one films they’re back with an album that’s just perfect for winter. ‘Valtari’ officially drops May 28th. Check out the first single ‘Ekki Mukk’.

New content coming soon...

If you have been wondering, I have neglected this for some time now.
New stuff from singer songwriter Kelli Scarr. Follow up from her debut album ‘Piece’ in 2010 comes the title track of her new album which just dropped. You can get it on itunes for those of us who are overseas.
Nothing has made me want to go travelling more then watching this new video for Washed Out’s song ‘Amor Fati’ off his debut album that came out this year ‘Within and Without’.

Shot in Iceland, it’s the typical ‘on the road’ video clip in which Washed Out (A.k.a Ernest Greene) slides in his minimalistic swoon with fellow musician Luke Rathborne standing in. He rambles along country roads, chases livestock, takes a bath with a beautiful woman, engages in some verbal foreplay with a hot dog vendor, and generally re-creating the hallucinatory sense of awe and alienation one gets on an extended foreign vacation.

check out the clip at EW here.

The Tinted History of The Rum Diary

It took Hunter S. Thompson 37 years to get his first novel, The Rum Diary published. And if you’ve ever read it you can kind of see why. It was pre-gonzo journalism but it had a remarkable style that was hard to get. It may of taken 37 years to get it published but it only took Johnny Depp a few weeks, maybe months, to actually become Hunter S. Thompson.

There’s this fabulous story about when Johnny Depp was asked by Hunter S. to play him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, where he submerged himself in everything Hunter S. Thompson, studying everything about the character that was Hunter. There is also this story that’s in the Alex Gibney documentary ‘Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson’ towards the end of Johnny Depp’s stay where Hunter actually shaves Depp’s head and gives him a whole bunch of clothes from 1970’s so that Depp can use for the ‘Vegas’ movie. They had this life-long friendship, that was more like a brotherly-love towards each other, that lasted well after Hunter died in 2005. There was no-one other than Johnny Depp that could have played Hunter, and there will never be. In away he is Hunter S. Thompson.

Not only has the book had a disastrous publishing history the movie as also been riddled with problems from the get-go. Independent production companies Shooting Gallery and SPi Films adapted the novel into a script in 2000 with Johnny Depp signed to star and be executive producer but it didn’t move past the production stage and toppled with that Hunter had also become frustrated with what was happening with his novel, with him writing that it was a “waterhead fuckaround”.

Since then it has gone through two other production company’s and a string of signed celebrities and several producers until Johnny Depp’s own company, Infinitum Nihil, took up the movie in 2009 with writer Bruce Robinson developing the screenplay and direct the movie. Robinson who was a recovering alcoholic at the time started drinking a bottle-a-day in order to over come writers-block and finish the movie, afterwards succumbing to sobriety.

If this is anything to go by then the movie can either go two ways. From the look of the trailer there is real hope and trust that this film will do it’s justice. But there have been trailers in the past that have done the same thing (there is a real art of the overshadowing overproduced trailer).

Check out the Trailer below about Paul Kemp a freelance journalist writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction

There is nothing like a good storyline to really question your own apocalyptic survival. If you haven’t thought of your game-plan for when the apocalypse happens then you are at a lose, whether it’s robots, aliens or zombies we all need a apocalypse plan. I’ve got mine sorted out, I’m going to go stack up at the local disposal’s shop with tents and camp gear and all those sorts of stuff and then find the nearest firearm store and raid that (if it hasn’t already been raided) and make a run for it to the country (or somewhere else secluded). If you need help with your own survival guide check out this site here it might help you with yours.

There’s something RAD about watching movies with graphic depiction of apocalyptic devastation, and the latest is ‘The Darkest Hour’. Directed by Chris Gorak, same guy who brought your ‘Right at Your Door’, brings this story of a group of young people who fight to survive after an alien invasion in Russia, but alas there’s a catch and as normal the aliens are invisible. The film is set for release at the end of this year. Check out the trailer below.

I said it once before and I’ll say it one again, there is something going on in Sweden that the rest of us don’t know about. I’ve noticed this trend in the last couple of years that there is some fantastic artist coming out of Sweden. It started with José González not so long ago with his cover The Knife’s ‘Heartbeats’ in 2003 and then Tallest Man On Earth came out a few years ago with his first album Shallow Grave. There must be something about the northern part of Europe that produces heart-drenching prolific warming folk music that’s just soothing to the ears and the mind.

The recent alumni is Idiot Wind also known as Amanda Bergman previously known as Hajen from Delarna Sweden. She is not only from the same place as but is also Kristian Matsson aka Tallest Man On Earth fiancee.

Any person to use a pseudonym of a Bob Dylan song is alright by me, especially when they sound this good.

She recently released her debut EP last November on her self managed lable Hast (Swedish for horse). Check out one of the songs of that EP below, ‘Canary Bird’ and below that a live track of Kristian Matsson and Amanda Bergman live onstage.

When you come across a local band that are residing in your own neck-of-the-woods and their amazing it’s hard not to get excited over what they bring out next.

The Crayon Fields, Melbourne four piece got quite a lot of attention a couple of years ago (2009) when they released their second album ‘All The Pleasures Of The World’ off Chapter Music (Aust). The Crayon Fields included Geoffrey O’Connor (guitar), Brett Hudson (bass), Chris Hung (guitar) and Neil Erenstrom (drums).

Not only in Australia but all around the world did they get quite a cult following, including several distinguished blog sites, like Big Stereo and Music (For Robots), and getting a huge rap from Pitchfork. As well as a massive notice from the online community they also got on a regular rotation on radio stations including our very own Triple J, but also overseas stations KCRW, KEXP and Woxy.

But recently Geoffrey O’Connor has gone off and has been working on his solo project and is about to released is debut solo album Vanity Is Forever out September 23rd.
It comes as a sigh of relief, Game Of Thrones. This medieval fantasy is riding high on the backs of what makes HBO one of the greatest channels around. It started with The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under & The Wire becoming hugely successful cult classic television series in the late 90’s and early 2000’s and once those series finished up it became shows such as Deadwood, True Blood, Entourage and Boardwalk Empire that came in with the reins and turned what was a great channel producing great shows into a channel that was becoming a center point of amazingly written stories that continued to produce satisfaction in each and every episode, creating depth and volume in character development and overall plot development.

HBO became a channel where every new show was good, so good that it kept you on the edge of your seat right up till the very end. I’ve noticed myself sometimes during an episode of True Blood or Deadwood clenching every muscle in my body, anticipating what is to come next.

Enough about how good this channel is; the newest show to come out of HBO’s clasp is the medieval fantasy Game Of Thrones, and just like most of the other shows from HBO it originates from the best-selling author George R. R. Martin’s series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’.

Set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, where “summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime,” Game of Thrones chronicles the violent dynastic struggles among the kingdom’s noble families for control of the Iron Throne; as the series opens, additional threats from the snow and ice covered region north of Westeros and from the eastern continent across a narrow sea are simultaneously beginning to rise.

That is basically what it’s about. It stars a huge cast of well-known actors including Sean Bean as the Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark as the front of one of the noble families. The cast also includes Peter Dinklage (Death At A Funeral), Lena Headey (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Aidan Gillen (The Wire) & Mark Addy (Still Standing).

It is an amazingly developed series. Just finished in the U.S and now just starting here in Australia on Showcase on Foxtell, this is a series to watch. I was firstly hesitant to watch this only because I was weary of a fantasy drama series but after the first two episodes I was hooked. More then hooked, I want more.

By looking at my recent posts I’ve got this thing about Robots and their relationship with humans, from science fiction writing nothing good comes from it.

TAKEN FROM GEEKOLOGIE.COM

This is a must-watch movie short (~13-minutes) about a boy who gets a pet robot named Blinky. Shit goes straight south from there. It was written and directed by Ruairi Robinson and stars Max from Where the Wild Things Are (which took some serious liberties with the original dialogue). It’s terrifying to say the least. Literally — THE LEAST. I already had a nightmare about stabbing a friend to death with Neptune’s trident and then I wake up to this. Wonderful. I would’ve rather woken up in the middle of a Saw movie with my nuts dangling in a food processor.

Hit the jump, stick it to the man for 13-minutes, then spend the rest of the day cowering under your desk with a letter opener.

check out the clip below.

One of the greatest things that I’ve found in the last couple of months is the collaboration between dubstep musician Burial, electro dj Four Tet and Radiohead front man Thom Yorke.

I don’t know what Thom Yorke’s diary is like but I’m guessing it’s quite jam packed, its seems like every other day he’s in the news either DJ at some event, releasing a new album with Radiohead or collaborating with strange and experimental artists.

A couple of years ago Four Tet (real name Kieran Hebden) and Burial released a few tracks, those tracks were ‘Wolf Cub’ & ‘Moth’, which really got people talking.

Then recently the duo got together with Thom Yorke and released a 12” on Four Tet’s own label ‘Text’, bring out the tracks ‘Ego’ & ‘Mirror’.

check out the tracks below if you haven’t done so already.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are from Denmark. They play alternative pop/psychedelic pop. They are pritty awesome.

The band is comprised of vocalist Mette Lindberg and producer Lars Iversen. And when performing live the band extends to a six-piece with horn section, featuring Miloud Carl Sabri (trumpet), Sven Meinild (saxophone), Mads Brinch Nielsen (guitar), and Rasmus Valldorf (drums).

They first released their EP, The Sun Ain’t No More in 2008 and got attention by some huge influential people in the Europe music industry, most notably Amy Winehouse spotted them and asked them to support her on her European tour. After that they got their songs played on several TV spots and Ad campaigns including Mad Men, Myers, Gossip Girl and Chuck.

A band to watch (and I know I say that quite a lot) especially after the release of Fruits which came out in 2009 but is till remarkable.

Check out the song ‘Around The Bend’ on the Ipod ad below

Taken from my review on SYN FM 90.7

Quite a few weeks ago I got the chance to witness first hand the amazing stage performance of Architecture in Helsinki at this year’s Golden Plains music festival. They came in on the second night playing close to midnight, walking on stage resembling a classic eighties wedding band, decked out in white tuxedos and Kellie Sutherland dressed in a sparkly sequin dress. Among some old and classic Architecture tunes they also played some new songs of their latest, and the crowd went nuts.

Moment Bends, the fourth album from the band and four years since Places Like This, is one that has been anticipated for quite a long time. Ever since the release of the indie-dance-infused ‘That Beep’ in 2008 fans have been warming their hands for more. To say that they delivered is an understatement all in itself.
Just like Places Like This, Moment Bends is filled to the brim with dance and party hits. Just like the first single of the album ‘Contact High’ at the very start of the album, plays just like a classic Architecture song but with a tint of disco and more fun. Even though it’s a song that is hard to understand lyrically the music will take over and you’ll be singing along to the computerized voices not knowing what is actually being said.

‘I Know Deep Down’ is another example of those enveloping hypnotic beats and a catchy chorus that really captures the pop/dance of the album. It feels as the album goes on, that the party is only beginning. It starts on a high with ‘Contact High’ and ‘Escapee’ and then it starts to slow with ‘Sleep Talkin’ and then kicks it up a gear as you hear the footsteps at the start of ‘That Beep’. Just watch you’ll be singing beeps throughout the night.

To be honest the album resembles their concert performance. It’s full of some danceable songs but also some intimate ones as well. Sit back, turn the lights off, turn it up loud and chill out with your dancing feet to Moment Bends. You’ll feel like you’re there right in front of them.

Also check out the clip for ‘Contact High’ below, one of the best songs of the album.

Ok, fine I’ll admit it I’m a gamer nerd. There you go! It’s out! And yes I play Call Of Duty. And no I’m not a noob-tuber or anything like that. I won’t get into specifics of the game but this clip came out ages ago and I still love it and I think it’s awesome. It was about time someone made something like this.

With songs named, ‘Replicants’ and ‘Calrissian’ who could straight away not like these guys. Straight from Florida, USA, comes these electro fused pop act on the Old Flame Records lable.

There’s not much to know about these guys but check them out and check out their album Replicants which came out a few years ago now but hey i’m a bit slow on the uptake

check out their website here.

or check out the song ‘Oblisk’ below.

Melbourne’s own Little Red have been busy little beavers lately. Not only touring extensively for their album Midnight Remember that came out in September 2010 but they have also taken time to shoot a new video for the current single ‘All Mine’.

Taken straight out of a scene from 2007’s ‘I Am Legend’ starring Will Smith, set in a post-apocalyptic deserted New York City, comes this clip directed by D’Arcy Foley-Dawson, set in the abandoned streets of our very own beautiful Melbourne.

The clip shows lead singer Dominic Byrne skating and wandering the streets of East Ivanhoe, playing guitar in the CBD and mucking about on Curtain House’s Rooftop Bar.

Never before have I seen the Melbourne streets so desolated and spooky. In an interview with Portable TV Byrne spoke about how they shot it, “We got up early on a Sunday so that we could get shots in the city without anyone else around. I stood on the edge of a road and did guitar solos. Fortunately people in Melbourne are used to all sorts of crazies so no-one took much notice.”

Check out the clip below also I’d like to quote from Mess+Noise, from where I found this, they’re great reasoning why there wasn’t any people on the streets while they were shooting, “So how did they recreate such a desolate landscape in a city of four million people? Easy: They just shot the thing while everyone was still at Pony.” HILARIOUS!
